Direct answer: Choose Gulmarg if the Gondola, a big meadow and reliable winter snow are the reason for your trip. Choose Sonmarg if you want the Sindh river and a quieter drive toward Thajiwas glacier. Both work as same-day trips from Srinagar, and our return cab to either costs ₹2,500 in an Etios or ₹3,500 in an Innova Crysta, tolls and parking included.
After "Gulmarg or Pahalgam?", this is the next question we hear at our Srinagar desk. If you have time, do both. They sit on different sides of the valley and feel nothing alike. If you only have one day, this is how we help guests choose.

Choose Gulmarg if…
- The Gondola is on your list. Buy tickets only on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation site. Our Gondola booking page explains how.
- You want snow in winter. January and February are the most reliable months, though snow is never guaranteed.
- You want a shorter drive. Gulmarg is closer to Srinagar. More in our Srinagar to Gulmarg by car post and the Gulmarg travel guide.
Choose Sonmarg if…
- You love rivers and quiet roads. Take the old road through Gagangir, where the Sindh runs right beside the car, and come back through the tunnel. See Sonmarg by the old road.
- You want a glacier view. Walk or take a pony toward Thajiwas when the track is open.
- Gulmarg feels too busy for you. Sonmarg days are usually calmer. More in our Sonmarg travel guide.
Can we do both?
Yes, on different days. Sonmarg and Gulmarg are in opposite directions from Srinagar, so we never put both on one day. A five to six-day trip covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam comfortably. See also our Gulmarg vs Pahalgam comparison and the Srinagar to Sonamarg taxi fare page.
Quick answers
Which is better, Sonmarg or Gulmarg?
Neither is better; they are different trips. Gulmarg is for the Gondola, the big meadow and winter snow. Sonmarg is for the Sindh river drive, the meadow and the walk toward Thajiwas glacier. If you have two free days, do both.
Which is closer to Srinagar, Gulmarg or Sonmarg?
Gulmarg is closer, about 51 km and 1.5 to 2.5 hours by car. Sonmarg is about 80 km by the main route (the Ganderbal district site says 87 km), around two to three hours without stops.
Can we visit Gulmarg and Sonmarg on the same day?
We do not recommend it. They are in opposite directions from Srinagar, so one day for both means most of the day in the car. Do them on separate days.
What is the taxi fare from Srinagar to Sonmarg or Gulmarg?
A same-day return trip to either costs ₹2,500 in a Toyota Etios or Dzire and ₹3,500 in an Innova Crysta, with tolls and parking included. Winter chains or a Tangmarg 4x4 for Gulmarg are extra.
