Direct answer: A prepaid SIM issued outside Jammu and Kashmir will not work in Kashmir, on Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL. It's a government rule, not a network fault. Postpaid connections do work. Before you fly, switch your number to postpaid (allow a few days), or buy a local J&K SIM with your original ID after you land. Foreign travel eSIMs generally don't work here either.
Which SIM works in Kashmir? Any postpaid SIM from Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL, or a prepaid SIM bought inside Jammu and Kashmir. In TRAI's June 2026 drive test in J&K, Jio and Airtel were the strongest networks, so Jio or Airtel postpaid is what we'd carry.
This is one of the most common surprises for our guests. People land in Srinagar, turn off flight mode, and their phone shows no service. It's not your phone and it's not the airport. It's the rule for prepaid numbers from other states, and it covers the whole of Jammu and Kashmir, including Jammu and Katra, not just the valley.
Why prepaid SIMs from other states don't work in Kashmir
Prepaid roaming into Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has been switched off for years for security reasons. In August 2022 the Minister of State for Communications told Parliament there was "no proposal at present" to allow it and that the restriction would continue. It still applies in 2026. Even buying a roaming pack won't help, because the block is on the connection type. Your operator can't switch it on for you.
Prepaid vs postpaid in Kashmir at a glance
| Your connection | Works in Kashmir? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid, issued outside J&K (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) | No | Switch to postpaid before you travel, or buy a local SIM after landing |
| Postpaid (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) | Yes | Check that roaming and VoLTE are on before you fly |
| Prepaid SIM bought in J&K | Yes | Buy from a Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL store with your original ID |
| Indian eSIM | Same as the connection behind it | A prepaid eSIM from outside J&K is still prepaid, so it won't work |
| Foreign travel eSIM or foreign SIM on roaming | Usually no / unreliable | Plan for a local SIM with passport and visa, and use Wi-Fi as backup |
How to switch prepaid to postpaid before you travel
This is the easiest fix, because you keep your own number and nothing changes for your bank OTPs or WhatsApp. Do it about a week before your flight, not the night before.
- Jio: in the MyJio app, go to Menu, Settings, Service settings and tap "Switch to Postpaid". Enter the OTP and pick a JioPlus postpaid plan. Jio says any balance left on your prepaid plan becomes credit against your postpaid bills, so it isn't wasted.
- Airtel: in the Airtel Thanks app go to Buy New Service, Postpaid, Prepaid to Postpaid, or use the "Switch prepaid to postpaid" page on airtel.in. Airtel says the switch is completed in 1 to 2 business days after verification.
- Vi and BSNL: both allow the switch too. Use their app or a store, and ask how long activation takes.
One catch to know about: after an OTP-based switch, you can't switch back the same way for 30 days, under a June 2025 DoT rule (90 days for later switches). If you want to go back to prepaid sooner, you'll have to visit a store and redo KYC. For most people a month or two on postpaid is no trouble, but plan for it.
Buying a local SIM in Srinagar or at the airport
If you didn't switch in time, a local J&K prepaid SIM is the other route. It works across Jammu and Kashmir once it's active.
Can you buy a SIM at Srinagar airport?
Don't count on it. The Airports Authority of India's list of facilities at Srinagar airport does not include a SIM counter. What it does list is free Wi-Fi for the first 30 minutes (up to 1 GB), which is enough to message us or your hotel that you've landed. We'd buy the SIM at a Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL store in the city instead. Your driver can stop at one on the way to your hotel or houseboat.
What ID you need
- Indian guests: your original Aadhaar, or another valid ID such as passport, voter ID or driving licence. Photocopies aren't enough.
- Your local address: because you're from outside J&K, the store will ask for a local address or reference. Your hotel or houseboat booking is what most guests use.
- A live photo and OTP: under DoT's digital KYC process the store takes your photo on the spot, and verification is often done with an OTP sent to another mobile number you give them. Keep your old phone or a family member's number handy.
Activation isn't instant. The SIM only goes live after the operator verifies it, so allow a few hours, and sometimes longer. Don't plan your first evening around it.
Foreign tourists: what works for you
Foreign guests can get an Indian SIM. You need:
- Your original passport with a valid Indian visa, plus a copy
- A passport-size colour photo
- A local reference address in India, which can be your tour operator, or your hotel if you have no local reference
Since July 2024, DoT lets operators send the verification OTP to your email if you don't have an Indian mobile number, which used to be the biggest hold-up. A tourist connection is valid only for your visa period and for no more than 3 months at a time.
Roaming on your home SIM is not something to rely on in J&K. Ask your own operator before you fly whether it works in Jammu and Kashmir specifically, not just "India". International travel eSIMs are generally a no: some providers state openly that their India eSIMs won't work in Jammu and Kashmir or Ladakh. If you've already bought one, test it in Delhi or wherever you land first, and keep Wi-Fi as backup.
Does an eSIM work in Kashmir?
An eSIM is just a digital version of your SIM card, so the same rule applies. An Indian postpaid eSIM from Jio, Airtel or Vi works in Kashmir. An Indian prepaid eSIM issued outside J&K doesn't. Switching from a physical SIM to an eSIM won't get around the block, but switching to postpaid will. Foreign travel eSIMs are covered above: don't rely on them here.
Internet speed in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg
The best recent data is TRAI's own drive test in Jammu and Kashmir, carried out from 8 to 12 June 2026 across Srinagar, Gulmarg, Anantnag and Pahalgam. A few findings that matter for a holiday:
- Jio and Airtel were the strongest overall. Average download speeds across all tested routes were about 213 Mbps on Jio and 183 Mbps on Airtel (5G and 4G combined), against about 21 Mbps on Vi and 10 Mbps on BSNL.
- The road to Gulmarg has gaps. On the Srinagar to Gulmarg highway, TRAI found poor data signal in about 14% of readings on Jio, 17% on Airtel, 34% on BSNL and 53% on Vi. Expect a few dead stretches on the drive up.
- Pahalgam is slower than Srinagar. At the Betaab Valley viewpoint, average downloads were about 12 to 17 Mbps on Jio, Airtel and BSNL, which is fine for WhatsApp and maps, while Vi mostly failed to connect. On the Anantnag and Pahalgam town route, poor data signal showed up in about 11% of readings on Jio, 13% on Airtel and over 40% on BSNL and Vi.
- Sonamarg wasn't part of that test. DoT's 2024 note on Amarnath Yatra coverage lists Jio sites at Sonamarg Main Market, Sonamarg Road and New Truck Yard, and an Airtel site at Sonamarg, with 4G and 5G at many sites along the route.
Short version: in Kashmir, Jio or Airtel postpaid is what we'd carry. Coverage is good in Srinagar and the main resort towns, thinner on mountain roads, and weak or absent in border areas. On our Keran Valley trips, for example, we tell guests to expect weak or no mobile signal. Your driver stays with you, so the plan doesn't depend on your phone.
What to do before you fly
- Switch to postpaid a week early, or decide you'll buy a local SIM on arrival and carry your original ID.
- Save our numbers offline. Write down +91 70060 85655 and +91 95960 44418 and your hotel name before you board.
- Share your flight details with us early. For an airport pickup in Srinagar the driver tracks your flight, so you're met even if your phone is silent when you land.
- Download offline maps for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
- Don't count on hotel Wi-Fi for work calls. It varies a lot between hotels and houseboats.

FAQ
Will my Jio or Airtel prepaid SIM work in Kashmir?
No, not if it was issued outside Jammu and Kashmir. The block applies to every operator's prepaid connections. Switch your number to postpaid before you travel, or buy a local J&K SIM with KYC after you land.
Does a postpaid SIM work in Kashmir?
Yes. Postpaid connections from Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL work across Jammu and Kashmir. Check that roaming and VoLTE are switched on, and expect weak signal on mountain roads and in remote valleys.
Does my prepaid SIM work in Jammu or Katra?
No. The rule covers the whole of Jammu and Kashmir, so an outside prepaid SIM stops working in Jammu and Katra too, not just in the valley.
What documents do I need for a local SIM in Kashmir?
Indian guests need an original ID such as Aadhaar, plus a local address like your hotel. Foreign guests need their passport with a valid visa, a photo and a local reference or hotel address. Activation can take a few hours.
What if my phone has no signal when I land in Srinagar?
Use the airport's free Wi-Fi (the first 30 minutes are free) to message your driver or hotel. If you booked our airport pickup, the driver tracks your flight and meets you at the spot we shared on WhatsApp before you flew.
Why does only postpaid work in Jammu and Kashmir?
Because of a government security rule, not a network fault. Roaming for prepaid connections between J&K (including Ladakh) and the rest of India is switched off, and in August 2022 the government told Parliament the restriction would continue. Postpaid connections are not covered by that block, so they work.
Does Jio postpaid work in Kashmir?
Yes. Jio postpaid works across Jammu and Kashmir, and so do Airtel, Vi and BSNL postpaid. Check that roaming and VoLTE are on before you fly. Jio and Airtel had the strongest signal in TRAI's June 2026 drive test.
Does an eSIM work in Kashmir?
Only if it is postpaid, or a prepaid eSIM issued in J&K. An eSIM follows the same rule as a physical SIM, so a prepaid eSIM from another state won't work. Foreign travel eSIMs are unreliable here.
Does a J&K prepaid SIM work in other states?
No. The roaming block works both ways, so a prepaid SIM issued in Jammu and Kashmir stops working when you leave J&K, according to the Department of Telecommunications order on prepaid services. A J&K postpaid SIM works across India.
Do I need to buy a new SIM for Kashmir?
Not if your number is postpaid, or if you switch it to postpaid about a week before you travel. If you stay on prepaid from another state, you'll need a local J&K SIM bought with your original ID.
