Yes, for the trips we run every week, Kashmir is safe for tourists right now. Our guests (couples, families, groups of friends and women travelling together) stay in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, and the places tourists visit are busy and well policed. The real risks on a normal trip are winter roads, cold, and the odd overcharging tout, not trouble on the street. One place stays off our plans: Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam is closed for visitors until the end of 2026, so we do not take guests there.
Is Kashmir safe for girls and women?
Women travel with us all the time, including all-ladies groups. Read how one group did it in our ladies trip to Kashmir post. Our simple rules: use a driver you booked in advance, not one from the roadside; stay in a hotel or houseboat with good reviews; dress comfortably and modestly in the old city and at shrines; and keep our number saved. Our drivers stay with you through the day and drop you to your door.
Is Kashmir safe in December?
December is safe, but it is the month when the weather decides your plan. Snow can close the Tangmarg to Gulmarg stretch for a few hours, so taxis may need chains or a 4x4 change. Sonamarg access depends on snow. Flights into Srinagar can be held by morning fog. We keep one spare half day in every winter plan for this. See Kashmir in December and Chillai Kalan 2026 for what the cold is like.
Groups and families
Groups are the easiest trips to keep safe: one vehicle, one driver who knows the route, and fixed check-in times. With kids and parents, the bigger danger is cold, so pack properly (our packing list helps) and do not push for a late return from Gulmarg after dark.
What actually goes wrong, and how to avoid it
- Touts and fake booking pages. Read our Kashmir tourist scams guide and pay only to a registered agency.
- Gondola tickets bought from strangers. Book only on the JKCCC portal or through us.
- Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work here. Carry postpaid, see does my SIM work in Kashmir.
- Driving yourself on snow. Leave winter roads to local drivers.

FAQ
Is Kashmir safe hai abhi?
Haan. The tourist circuit of Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg is open and busy. Baisaran stays closed until the end of 2026. Check road and weather news a day before each drive, or ask us.
Is Kashmir safe for a solo female traveller?
Yes, with a booked driver and a well reviewed stay. Many of our women guests come in pairs or small groups; solo is fine too. See our solo tour page.
Should I avoid Kashmir in winter?
No. Winter is when most people come for snow. Just keep a spare half day and let a local driver handle the roads.
