The two places most people mean when they say "Sonamarg sightseeing": the Thajiwas glacier walk above the meadow, and the snow at Zero Point beyond Zoji La.
Direct answer: Sonamarg is about 80 km from Srinagar on NH1, under 3 hours by car. Thajiwas glacier is the walk or pony ride from Sonamarg itself, and it fits easily in a day trip. Zero Point is past Baltal and Zoji La on the Ladakh road, so it is seasonal and is not part of our Sonamarg day-trip fare. A same-day return taxi from Srinagar to Sonamarg with us is ₹2,500 in a Toyota Etios or Swift Dzire and ₹3,500 in an Innova Crysta, tolls and parking included. Ponies and local taxis at Sonamarg are hired and paid there.
Our car drops you in Sonamarg. From there the usual plan is a walk or a pony toward Thajiwas glacier, then the drive back to Srinagar. Ponies are hired and paid at the stand; they are not part of our fare, and we do not print the day's pony rate.
The Srinagar to Sonamarg drive follows the Sindh river through Ganderbal, Kangan and Gund to Gagangir, then through the 6.4 km Sonamarg tunnel that opened on 13 January 2025. The full route and fare are on the Srinagar to Sonamarg taxi fare page, and the valley itself is in our Sonamarg travel guide.
Zero Point is beyond Sonamarg, over Zoji La on the road towards Ladakh. Anything past Sonamarg (Baltal, Zoji La, Zero Point) is not in the same-day Sonamarg fare. The road is seasonal and opens and closes with snow, so send us your date on WhatsApp and we check the road and quote it separately.
In the Amarnath Yatra weeks the road to Baltal also carries pilgrim traffic, so we plan an early start. See the Amarnath Yatra guide.
The Sonamarg page on kashmirtourismofficial.com names May to September as the best time. That is when the Thajiwas walk is easiest and the Zoji La road is most likely to be open. Later in autumn and in winter, check the road before you plan Zero Point; the tunnel helps reach Sonamarg, but snow above it can still close the road. The Kashmir weather guide has month-by-month conditions.
