The route at a glance

Road distance About 51 km from Lal Chowk by OpenStreetMap routing. The Baramulla district website puts it at about 54 km by road.
Driving time About an hour and a half by car, per the Baramulla district website. Srinagar traffic, photo stops and snow add to that.
Route Srinagar out on NH1, the Magam side, then Tangmarg, then the climb to the meadow. Tangmarg to Gulmarg is the last 11–12 km.
Last town before the climb Tangmarg: fuel, an ATM, tea, and in winter the chain and 4x4 point.

  • Snow chains or the Tangmarg union 4x4 in snow (union rates above).
  • Tolls, parking, driver allowance and waiting time: the listing does not state them, so the WhatsApp quote says whether they are inside the figure.
  • A Gulmarg or Tangmarg hotel night. Ask for it separately.

Pickup points

  • Any Srinagar hotel: we come to the door.
  • Dal Lake or Nigeen houseboat: the driver waits on the road at your ghat. See Dal Lake stays.
  • Srinagar airport, if you want to go straight up after landing. That is a separate quote, not the ₹2,500 figure. See the airport taxi.

The road: valley first, then the climb

Most of the drive is flat valley road out of Srinagar, through orchards and fields on the Magam side. After Tangmarg the road climbs through pine on hairpins for the last 11–12 km. That last part is where the driver matters, and it is the stretch where snow stops ordinary cars.

Best time, and what each season does to this drive

  • Spring to autumn: a straightforward day trip. Leave after breakfast and the meadow is a half day, then back to Srinagar.
  • Winter: when snow lies on the Tangmarg to Gulmarg stretch, ordinary cars need chains or stop at Tangmarg, and a union 4x4 takes you up and back. After heavy snow the road can stay shut for a morning. We do not promise a dawn start after a storm.
  • Snow is never guaranteed on a given date. Our snowfall timing guide shows when it has come in past years, and we posted the first dusting on Phase 2 in September 2026.

Gondola days need planning. Phase 1 goes to Kongdoori (8,530 ft) and Phase 2 continues up to about 12,293 ft, per the Baramulla district website. Book your slot first, then tell us the time so the car leaves Srinagar early enough.

Day trip, or one night up there?

Most of our guests sleep in Srinagar and do Gulmarg as a day. A night on the meadow makes sense if you hold an early gondola slot the next morning, or you are skiing. Then book the one-way drop, and a separate pickup for the day you come down. Couples who want a slow meadow day can see Gulmarg in October for couples.

How long does the drive take?

It is about 51–54 km. The Baramulla district website says about an hour and a half by car. Allow more for Srinagar traffic, stops and snow.

Can we go straight from Srinagar airport to Gulmarg?
