Wear layers, not one heavy jacket. In a Kashmir winter you go from a heated car to deep snow in Gulmarg and back to a warm hotel, so three thin layers plus a windproof jacket work better than one big coat. Feet and hands matter most: waterproof shoes with grip, woollen socks, and gloves you can still use your phone in.
The winter packing list
- Thermal inner top and bottom (two sets)
- Fleece or woollen sweater
- Windproof, water resistant jacket with a hood
- Warm trousers; no plain jeans for snow days
- Waterproof shoes or boots with good grip
- Woollen socks, more pairs than you think
- Gloves, woollen cap, muffler or neck warmer
- Sunglasses and sunscreen: snow glare is strong
- Lip balm and moisturiser; the air is very dry
- Power bank; batteries drain fast in the cold

Pack one extra inner layer each, waterproof mittens for kids, and a small hot water bottle. Keep a change of socks in the car on Gulmarg day.

Are jeans OK in Kashmir in winter?
Fine for Srinagar with thermals underneath. On snow they get wet and cold, so wear warm trousers that day.
What should women wear in Kashmir?
Whatever keeps you warm and comfortable. In the old city and at shrines, cover shoulders and carry a scarf.
