Kashmir Honeymoon in December: Snow Odds, Heating and Where to Sleep

December in Kashmir for two: below-freezing nights, a fair but never certain chance of Gulmarg snow, heated rooms first, and a six-day shape for couples.

December is the month when the honest answer to the snow question starts to lean towards yes, at least up in Gulmarg. It is also the month of short days, the odd foggy morning, heated rooms that fill early for the last ten days, and the start of Chillai Kalan on 21 December. A December honeymoon can be the trip you imagined, if the rooms, the order of the nights and the expectations are right before you pay.

Direct answer: A Kashmir honeymoon in December suits couples who want real winter: cold, crisp days, a heated room to come back to, and a fair chance of snow in Gulmarg, but no guarantee. IMD's long-term averages put Srinagar at about 10 C by day and below freezing at night, and Gulmarg colder still. Sleep in Gulmarg if snow is the reason for the trip, keep your houseboat night only if heating is confirmed in writing, and keep a spare day before the flight home. The ground plan with a starting rate is our Kashmir honeymoon package; the month-by-month choice is on Kashmir honeymoon by season.

December weather in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam

These are long-term averages, not a forecast for your week. Source: India Meteorological Department, Met Centre Srinagar, city climatological tables for 1991-2020.

Place Average daily max Average daily min Average rainfall Average rainy days
Srinagar 9.9 C -1.6 C 27.2 mm 2.6
Gulmarg 4.6 C -4.8 C 74.1 mm 4.7
Pahalgam 7.9 C -4.2 C 59.7 mm 3.9

Source link: IMD Met Centre Srinagar climate tables. IMD lists precipitation under "rainfall" and does not split out snow, so the table cannot tell you how many snow days to expect.

What that means for two people on holiday:

  • All three places average below freezing at night. A room without working heat is a sleepless night, not an adventure
  • Srinagar afternoons can be bright in a good coat; mornings and evenings are properly cold
  • December has the most fog days of any month in IMD's Srinagar table, about 1.5 on average. It is not many, but it is why we never put a flight on the same day as a long drive

For comparison, the same IMD table puts November in Srinagar at about 15.9 C by day and 1.2 C at night. If you have read our Kashmir honeymoon in November guide, December is the next step colder, with better snow odds and more people.

Will there be snow on a December honeymoon?

There is a fair chance in Gulmarg at some point in the month, a smaller one in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, and only sometimes any in Srinagar city. Nobody can promise it for your dates, and anyone who does is guessing. In our Kashmir snowfall guide we describe December as the month when snow in the resorts becomes likely, but not certain. Our Kashmir in winter page is blunter: December can be thin snow.

Two recent winters show the range:

  • A dry one. The EU's Copernicus programme reported that Gulmarg had only one day of snow in December 2023 and none in January 2024. The Hindu, quoting IMD data, reported just 17.6 mm of precipitation in Gulmarg that December, against the long-term December average of 74.1 mm above
  • A snowy one. On 27 December 2024 Srinagar got its first major snowfall of that winter. Flights were cancelled, and The Hindu reported that air traffic was restored on 29 December

How we plan around it:

  • Put Gulmarg in the middle of the trip, not on the last day, so a fresh spell has time to arrive and a bad-weather day has room to move
  • If snow under your feet is the whole point, consider January or early February, when snow cover is usually more dependable, and look at our Kashmir winter tour package
  • If it does not snow, Gulmarg is still cold, quiet and beautiful. Plan the day around the meadow, the gondola if it runs, and a long warm lunch, not around one white photograph

Where to sleep on a December honeymoon

Srinagar: a heated hotel, and one houseboat night if the heat is confirmed

We usually keep the first night, and often the second, in Srinagar, so a delayed flight ends in a warm room, not a dark drive to Gulmarg. The houseboat night still works in December with one firm rule: heating confirmed in writing before you pay. Ask how the bedroom is heated (central heating, oil radiator, electric blanket or a wood bukhari), whether hot water runs in the evening, and whether heating is charged extra. If a boat cannot confirm it, we move the night to a heated hotel and tell you why.

Our Dal Lake in winter post explains why we take the shikara around midday in the cold, and what frozen edges really look like. If you want quieter water, read Nigeen Lake for couples. The full houseboat checklist is in our houseboat in Srinagar price guide.

Gulmarg: the snow nights

If snow is the reason you chose December, sleep up there for one or two nights rather than driving up and back in a day. After snow, the stretch from Tangmarg to Gulmarg can need chains or a local 4x4, and a room in Gulmarg means you are already at the gondola base in the morning. The Gulmarg honeymoon package is built for exactly this, and we confirm the room's heating before we book it.

The gondola is a weather call in December, especially Phase 2, and tickets are not part of our packages. They are sold in your own names on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation site, and popular December slots go early. Our Gulmarg gondola booking page explains how to do it.

Pahalgam: only if the road and the room are right

Pahalgam in December is quiet and very cold, with the Lidder freezing at the edges in hard spells. The town is usually reachable, but we confirm the road after any fresh snow, and side valleys like Aru and Betaab depend on how recently it snowed and whether roads are cleared. On a trip of seven days or more, a night or two by the river can be the calmest part of the honeymoon; see the Pahalgam couples package. On a shorter trip, we usually leave it out.

Sonamarg and beyond

The Sonamarg tunnel, opened on 13 January 2025, has made the road to Sonamarg more reliable in winter than it used to be, but we still decide a Sonamarg day the evening before. Beyond Sonamarg, the Directorate of Tourism lists the Zojila pass as open from May to November, weather permitting, so that road is not part of a December plan. We do not plan Gurez in December at all.

A December shape we use for couples

This is not a fixed itinerary, just the pacing that tends to work in deep cold and short days.

  1. Arrival: airport to a heated Srinagar hotel, a short walk if the pavement is dry, early dinner
  2. Srinagar and the lake: a midday private shikara, a long lunch, and the houseboat night if heating is confirmed
  3. To Gulmarg: drive up in the morning, check in, walk the meadow, and keep the evening for the room
  4. Gulmarg morning: gondola if the weather and your tickets allow, otherwise a slow snow walk if there is snow, or the quiet meadow if there is not
  5. Back to Srinagar: sleep in the city the night before your flight
  6. Departure: keep the morning loose. Fog or snow can hold flights, so a spare day in the plan is worth more than one more sight

With seven days or more, add Pahalgam between Srinagar and Gulmarg, weather permitting.

What to book first for December

  • Heated rooms. Before the car, before the gondola. The better heated rooms and houseboats go first, especially for Christmas week and the days around 31 December
  • Gondola tickets, on the official site, as soon as your Gulmarg morning is fixed
  • Flights with a daytime arrival. Days are short, and a late landing makes the first day check-in and dinner
  • A private car with a working heater, and a driver who knows the Tangmarg rules on the day
  • One spare day before the flight home

Timing matters this year. For travel in the last ten days of December, we advise couples to book about two months ahead, which means by late October. Our why book winter packages early post explains what runs out first.

What to pack for two

  • Thermal base layers, a proper winter coat, wool cap, gloves and a scarf for both of you
  • Waterproof boots with grip. Sports shoes get soaked in snow and slip on icy ghat steps
  • Moisturiser and lip balm; the cold, dry air is hard on skin
  • One smarter warm outfit for photos, so the coat is not in every picture

Kashmir honeymoon in December: questions couples ask

Is December a good month for a Kashmir honeymoon?

Yes, if you want winter: cold, crisp days, heated rooms and a fair chance of snow in Gulmarg. It is not the right month if you dislike cold or need guaranteed snow. Snow is never guaranteed in any month.

How cold is Kashmir in December?

IMD's 1991-2020 normals put Srinagar at about 9.9 C by day and -1.6 C at night on average. Gulmarg averages about 4.6 C and -4.8 C, and Pahalgam about 7.9 C and -4.2 C. Your week can be colder or milder than the average.

Will it snow in Srinagar in December?

Sometimes, usually late in the month if at all. In the 2024-25 winter, Srinagar's first major snowfall came on 27 December 2024. In other winters the city stays cold and dry. Gulmarg gives you better odds than the city.

Is a houseboat too cold in December?

Not if the heating works. We confirm the bedroom heating, evening hot water and extra blankets in writing before you pay. If a boat cannot confirm it, we book a heated hotel instead.

How many days do we need for a December honeymoon?

Six days is the shape we like for Srinagar, a houseboat night and two Gulmarg nights with a buffer before the flight. Seven or more lets you add Pahalgam.

Plan your December trip

Tell us your dates, how cold you are both happy to be, and whether snow is a hope or a must. We will tell you honestly what December can give you, place the Gulmarg nights where they make sense, and confirm heating before anything is paid.
