Direct answer: Choose Gulmarg if snow, the Gondola and a big open meadow are the reason for your trip. Choose Pahalgam if you want river, pine forest and slow valley walks. Gulmarg is closer (51 km from Srinagar) and works well with one night up there; Pahalgam (96 km) deserves two nights. Our 2026 packages start from ₹16,999 (Gulmarg, 4D/3N) and ₹19,999 (Pahalgam, 5D/4N) per person.
This is the question we get most often at our Pantha Chowk desk in Srinagar, usually from guests with five or six days who feel they have to pick one. Both are worth it. They are simply different trips, and the right one depends on what you want to remember when you get home.

Choose Gulmarg if…
- Snow is the point. December to March is Gulmarg's snow season, and January and February are the most reliable. Snow is never guaranteed, even in December.
- You want the Gondola. Phase 1 runs from the Gulmarg base to Kongdori, where most families stop. Phase 2 continues to Apharwat and can shut on high-wind or heavy-snow days, often without notice. Tickets are sold by the J&K Cable Car Corporation on its official site and are not part of our packages. See our Gulmarg Gondola booking notes.
- You have less time. At 51 km, Gulmarg fits a short trip. Our 4-day Gulmarg tour package puts one night up there so you are at the Gondola base for the earliest slot, then brings you back to a Srinagar hotel before your flight.
In winter, the stretch from Tangmarg to Gulmarg can need snow chains or a Tangmarg union 4x4. Those are market and union rates, paid on the spot. More on the town in our Gulmarg travel guide.
Choose Pahalgam if…
- You prefer walking to queuing. The Lidder runs right through town and the riverside walk needs no ticket and no union car. Our Pahalgam village walk post shows the quieter side we like.
- You are travelling with elders or children. Betaab is the easiest of the three valleys: flat meadow, a stream and walking paths.
- You want the drive to be part of the day. On the way south we stop at the Pampore saffron fields and the Awantipora ruins. Saffron is in flower for a few weeks around late October and early November.
- You can give it two nights. Our 5-day Pahalgam tour package builds in two nights by the Lidder, so Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari get a full day.
The union rule: your Srinagar cab cannot take you to Aru, Betaab or Chandanwari. Past Pahalgam town, the local taxi union runs those valleys in its own cars; your driver waits in Pahalgam. Agree the route and time at each stop before you get in. Chandanwari is also the start of the Amarnath Yatra route, so July and August access can be restricted. Baisaran is closed until the end of 2026. See our Pahalgam travel guide.
By season
- December to March: Gulmarg for snow; book heated rooms first. Pahalgam is very cold and quiet, and we confirm the road after fresh snow.
- April to June: both are peak dates. Snow lingers up top in Gulmarg while the meadow opens; Chandanwari usually has snow into May or June.
- July to September: Gulmarg is green meadow at off-peak prices. Pahalgam is busy with yatra convoys in July and August, so we leave early.
- October to November: clear skies and cold mornings in both. Early snow can dust Apharwat; do not plan a trip around it.

Can we do both?
Yes, with five or six days or more. Base in Srinagar, keep Gulmarg in the middle of the trip so a cloudy morning does not cost you the Gondola, and give Pahalgam its two nights. If you would rather not change hotels, our Srinagar tour package (from ₹12,999 per person) keeps you in the city with one day trip. Car-only? See the Srinagar to Gulmarg taxi fare and Srinagar to Pahalgam taxi fare pages, or all our Kashmir tour packages.
What a family of four pays
On off-peak dates, four people in two rooms with an Innova Crysta instead of the Etios pay about ₹58,000 in total for the Gulmarg package and about ₹68,000 for the Pahalgam package. Send the children's ages and your dates on WhatsApp for the exact figure.
Gulmarg vs Pahalgam: quick answers
Which is better for snow, Gulmarg or Pahalgam?
Gulmarg. December to March is its snow season, with January and February the most reliable, and the Gondola takes you higher to Apharwat. Pahalgam is cold and quiet in winter, but its side valleys depend on road clearing. Snow is never guaranteed in either place, even in December.
Which is closer to Srinagar?
Gulmarg. The Directorate of Tourism brochures put Gulmarg at 51 km and Pahalgam at 96 km from Srinagar. From our cars, Gulmarg usually takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours and Pahalgam about 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic, stops and Tangmarg conditions in winter.
Can our Srinagar cab drive us around Pahalgam's valleys?
No. Past Pahalgam town, the local taxi union runs Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari in its own cars, at about ₹2,200 to ₹2,800 per vehicle, paid locally. Your Srinagar cab and driver wait in Pahalgam. The Lidder riverside walk and village walks need no union car at all.
Is the Gulmarg Gondola included in your package?
No. Gondola tickets for Phase 1 and Phase 2 are sold by the J&K Cable Car Corporation on its official site and are extra, as are ponies and sledges. Once your dates are fixed, we tell you when to book and which slot to take, ideally the earliest one after a night in Gulmarg.
