Pampore saffron is the crop in the fields you drive through between Srinagar and Pahalgam. The bloom is the back end of October into November. In May the same fields are green and there is nothing to photograph except the shops, which stay open and still sell last season’s threads.
At a grower’s counter in Pampore, or at a government emporium back in Srinagar. Those are the two places we will stop. A “best saffron shop in Pampore” headline usually means whoever paid for the article. We will not rank stalls we do not restock from. If you are already going to Pahalgam, the stop is ten minutes on that road, then you carry on. See the Pahalgam couples package if the night in town is the point.
Whole deep-red stigmas, not a yellow powder and not a wet clump. Kashmir saffron carries a GI for the crop grown here. That mark is a start. It is not a spell against a mixed tin. Smell it. Put two threads in warm water and watch the colour leave the thread slowly. Walk away if the seller rushes you or will not open the tin.
A rupee-per-gram price. The harvest changes it. We also will not send you to a Boulevard hawker. Dry fruit from the same shops is a separate buy. If you want walnuts carved in wood, that is Doon Kul, not a saffron tin.

No. The rate moves with the harvest. Ask to see the threads, buy a small amount if you are unsure, and do not take a “best shop” list from a page that has not been in the field that week.
The threads are deep red, dry, and they smell floral, not like paint. Soak a couple in warm water: the colour should release slowly and the thread should not dissolve into powder. If the seller will not let you look closely, leave.
