Two quieter north Kashmir valleys near Kupwara: Lolab's forests and pastures, and Bangus (Bungus) high meadows in Handwara. Best planned with our private car from Srinagar.
Direct answer: Lolab and Bangus are offbeat valleys in Kupwara district, north of Srinagar via Kupwara. They are quieter than Gulmarg or Pahalgam. The district page puts the Lolab road at about 114 km and about four hours on rocky terrain from the Srinagar side, so a same-day return is a long day; many guests stay overnight or do Lolab only. For Bangus and any overnight plan, WhatsApp us your dates. Our private Etios, Dzire or Innova Crysta runs with our Srinagar driver; WhatsApp us for today's rate.
Per the District Kupwara Lolab page, Lolab valley is named after Maharaja LOLO and is known for lush green forests and pastures stretching nearly 25 km from north-west to south-east, with breadth from a few yards to about 5 km. A stream called Lalkul (Lahwal) runs through it, fed by tributaries from Deodar-covered hills. The same page notes Sat Barran (Seven doors) and a cave in the jungles of Madmadav, Lov-nag in Anderbaugh village, and road connectivity onward toward Machil.
Kupwara town is the main access point. The district page says the nearest airport is Srinagar, about 90 km from Kupwara, and that the Lolab road distance of about 114 km is covered in about four hours because of the rocky terrain. Seemab Valley sits about 4 km from the Kupwara tourist reception centre at the entrance to Lolab (Seemab Valley page).
Per the District Kupwara Bungus Valley page, Bangus lies in the northern part of Kupwara within the Handwara sub-district, at around 10,000 ft. It occupies an estimated 300 sq km (about 20×15 km). Bodh Bangus (Big Bangus) is the main linear bowl; Lokut Bangus (Small Bangus) lies on the north-eastern side. Both are described as level green meadows ringed by low mountains with dense coniferous forest and a stream. The district page says buses and cabs for the area are available from Srinagar.
Bangus is farther into the Handwara side than a quick Lolab picnic. Tell us whether you want meadows only, or Lolab plus Bangus across two days.
Honest plan: with about four hours each way quoted for the Lolab road on the district page, a Srinagar same-day return is tight if you also want time in the meadows. A Lolab day with an early start can work; pairing Bangus the same day usually does not. Overnight near Kupwara or in the valley is the kinder option when you want both. We do not print a fixed km table beyond the district figures above — WhatsApp us your hotel and dates for a timed plan.
Nearby north Kashmir trips on our site: Gurez Valley trip, camping in Gurez, the Gurez permit and road guide, and Keran Valley (also Kupwara side).
We do not invent a separate Lolab or Bangus permit office on this page. For nearby north Kashmir valleys we already document the caution clearly: Indian guests travel with government photo ID; foreign guests may need prior written permission, and the rule in force that month must be confirmed before we take a deposit. See the Gurez permit guide and the Keran Valley post (Keran uses Kralpora / DM Kupwara channels). Tell us your nationality when you enquire for Lolab or Bangus so we can confirm what applies that week.
The day or overnight runs in a private Toyota Etios, Swift Dzire or Innova Crysta with our Srinagar driver. Tolls and parking are included in our fares. For Lolab / Bangus, WhatsApp us for today's rate — we do not print a stale fare for this longer north route. For comparison, our same-day return taxi from Srinagar to Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg is ₹2,500 in an Etios or Dzire and ₹3,500 in an Innova Crysta (Kashmir taxi rates).

Both are in Kupwara district, north of Srinagar via Kupwara. Lolab is reached with Kupwara as the main access town. Bangus (Bungus) sits in northern Kupwara within the Handwara sub-district, at around 10,000 ft per the district page.
The District Kupwara Lolab page quotes about 114 km and about four hours on rocky terrain from the Srinagar side. Srinagar airport is listed as about 90 km from Kupwara. Exact drive time depends on the day's road and stops.
Lolab alone can be a long same-day return if you leave early. Adding Bangus the same day is usually too much. Overnight is kinder when you want both. WhatsApp us your dates and hotel for a timed plan.
