Srinagar’s airport, Sheikh ul-Alam International (SXR), is a short drive from the city. Once you collect your bags, the driver is waiting in arrivals with your name. If the flight is late, the driver is already following it from the flight number you sent, so you do not need to call from the belt.
Most arrivals go to a Boulevard Road hotel or a Dal Lake or Nigeen houseboat. For a houseboat, the car stops at the ghat and the houseboat’s shikara takes you across with the bags. Couples arriving for a honeymoon often go straight to the houseboat and take a Shikara at sunset the same evening.
Two people with normal luggage fit in an Etios. A family of four or five with suitcases, or anyone carrying winter gear, should book an Innova Crysta. Larger groups need two cars or a tempo traveller; tell us the head count and the number of big bags and we will say which.
Leave more time for the drive to the airport than you would at home. There is a security check at the airport entrance before the terminal, and the queue grows on busy mornings. Send your flight time and we set the hotel pickup from it.
In winter, fog and snow can delay flights in and out of Srinagar. Keep the first afternoon of the trip light and avoid the last flight of the day home if you have a connection. See Kashmir in winter for more.
