Kashmir vs Manali in winter? For deep snow, skiing and a trip you can fly straight into, we'd pick Kashmir, and our 22 September reel shows why. It's January footage from Pahalgam: snow up to the shins, every branch on the trees bent white, flakes still falling, and the line on screen says it plainly: "This is Kashmir, not Manali! Your winter destination is calling." Manali is still a good winter trip for some travellers, especially if you're driving up from Delhi or Chandigarh, and we'll say where it wins.
Watch it on our Instagram: heavy January snow in Pahalgam, "book Kashmir, not Manali" (22 Sep 2026)

From our 22 Sep 2026 reel, filmed in Pahalgam in January.
We're a Srinagar agency, so read this knowing which side we're on. We've kept the Manali facts to government and news sources, dated, and we'll tell you where Manali is the better call.
Kashmir vs Manali in winter: the short answer
| What you're comparing | Kashmir (Srinagar, Gulmarg) | Manali |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Gulmarg 2,650 m; Gondola Phase 2 goes to about 3,980 m (J&K Tourism) | Manali town 2,050 m (HPTDC); Solang about 13 km away |
| Getting there | Fly into Srinagar, or the Vande Bharat train from Katra (about 3 hours, running since June 2025) | Mostly by road: about 570 km from Delhi (HPTDC), overnight bus or car; small Bhuntar airport 50 km away |
| Where the snow is | Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam; Srinagar itself in some spells | Solang and the Atal Tunnel side when open; Rohtang Pass is shut to tourists in winter |
| Skiing | Gulmarg slopes and the Gondola | Solang slopes, on days the operators run |
| Something besides snow | Dal Lake, houseboats, shikara, Wazwan | Old Manali cafes, Hadimba temple, the road trip itself |
| Our verdict | Better for a first snow trip, honeymooners, skiers and anyone flying in | Better for a short drive-in break from Delhi or Punjab |
What our January reel shows (and what it doesn't)
The reel is 20 seconds long. Zahid, founder of Travel Etios Kashmir, wades in a black hooded jacket through snow deep enough to bend down into, scoops it up, and points at the trees around him. Then the camera turns to a forested slope where every tree is coated white, with fresh flakes in the air. The reel was filmed in Pahalgam. The caption says this snow "is from Kashmir, captured in January", and calls it "just a glimpse of what Kashmir is going to look like in the coming months."
What it doesn't show is a guarantee. One January clip is one good day. Snow comes in spells in both places, and some winters start late: in December 2025, Kashmir waited through a dry spell of about a month and a half before the first proper snow on 21 December (Indian Express). So when we say Kashmir in winter, we mean plan for January and February if snow is the whole point, and keep a day spare.

Where Kashmir wins in winter
Snow at height, and a way up into it
Gulmarg sits at 2,650 m, and the Gondola's second phase climbs to about 3,980 m on Kongdoori, a shoulder of Apharwat (J&K Tourism figures). That height is why Gulmarg holds snow through the season and why it's a real ski resort, not just a snow point. Gondola tickets are sold only by the J&K Cable Car Corporation, so book there, and check our Gulmarg Gondola booking help page if you want us to plan the day around it.
You can fly straight in
Srinagar has a proper airport with direct flights from several Indian cities, and since 6 June 2025 the Vande Bharat train runs from Katra to Srinagar in about 3 hours (PIB / PM India release). Manali's own airport at Bhuntar is small, and most guests go up by road from Delhi or Chandigarh. For families with elders or small kids, that difference matters more than any view. Our how to reach Kashmir page lists the options.
Winter isn't only snow here
On a day when the roads are slow, you still have Srinagar: a shikara on Dal Lake, a night on a houseboat, kahwa by the bukhari, a Wazwan meal. Manali's town side is lovely, but it's smaller.

The last shot of the reel: fresh snow on the trees.
Where Manali wins
If you live in Delhi, Chandigarh or Punjab and want snow over a long weekend by car, Manali is closer. HPTDC puts it at about 570 km from Delhi by road, and overnight Volvo buses run on the route. You don't need a flight, and you can decide on the day.
Manali also has Solang, about 13 km from town, with slopes, a ropeway and snow activities when operators are running. Just know that Rohtang Pass is normally shut to tourists in winter, and the Atal Tunnel goes under the pass, not to the top. On heavy snow days police have stopped tourist cars at Solang or Palchan (The Tribune, January 2025 and January 2026).
The honest part: winter traffic in both places
The same snow that makes the photos also makes the roads hard. The last weekend of January 2026 is a good example, because both places got hit at once:
- Manali: a 15 km jam and power cuts during the Republic Day weekend (Hindustan Times, 25 Jan 2026). Police said the 16 km from Patlikuhal to Manali, normally about 30 minutes, took nearly 12 hours on 25 January (Indian Express, 26 Jan 2026). Rohtang and the other passes were closed (The Tribune, 28 Jan 2026).
- Kashmir: Gulmarg got over 50 cm of fresh snow, and police moved more than 1,600 tourists between Tangmarg and Gulmarg in 4x4 SUVs with chains (Hindustan Times, 25 Jan 2026). The Srinagar to Gulmarg drive, usually about an hour and a half, took 4 to 5 hours that weekend (NDTV, 24 Jan 2026).
So neither place is "smooth" on a heavy snow day. What helps in Kashmir is planning around it: stay a night in Gulmarg instead of a same-day return, switch to a union 4x4 with chains at Tangmarg when the police require it (that's run by the local union at its own rates, not by us), and keep one spare day at the end before your flight. Our Tangmarg stay post covers the night-before option.
Which one should you pick?
- First time seeing snow, or a honeymoon: Kashmir. Gulmarg for the snow, Srinagar and a houseboat for the rest.
- You want to ski: Kashmir, Gulmarg.
- Family with elders: Kashmir, because you can fly in and keep road time short.
- Two or three days, driving from Delhi or Chandigarh: Manali makes more sense. Kashmir needs at least five or six days to be worth the flight.
- Strict budget, travelling by bus: Manali is cheaper to reach. In Kashmir, compare against our Kashmir trip cost guide before deciding.
Kashmir vs Manali in December and January
December is the gamble month in both places. In Kashmir, Chillai Kalan, the coldest 40 days, starts on 21 December, and the first heavy snow sometimes lands around then and sometimes later. Our Kashmir in December guide has the dated examples. January is the safer bet for snow on the ground in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and our Pahalgam reel is January footage for that reason. For where snow usually falls first, see when and where to see snow in Kashmir.
On temperature: J&K Tourism gives Gulmarg's winter range as roughly -8°C to 5°C, and Srinagar dropped to -8.5°C on 21 December 2024. Pack thermals, waterproof boots and gloves for either trip. Manali in January is also below zero at night; check the IMD forecast for both before you book.

FAQ
Which is better in January, Kashmir or Manali?
For snow you can count on and skiing, Kashmir, mainly Gulmarg. For a short drive from Delhi, Manali. In both, a heavy snow day can close roads for hours, so keep a spare day.
Is Kashmir colder than Manali in winter?
Gulmarg is higher than Manali town (2,650 m against 2,050 m), so it's usually colder and holds snow longer. Srinagar is lower, but it still drops below zero at night in December and January.
Is Rohtang Pass open in winter?
No, it's normally closed to tourists in winter. In Manali, snow trips go to Solang or, when it's open, the Atal Tunnel side.
