Kashmir vs Switzerland: The Question From Our Reel, Answered Honestly

Our September reel asked "Switzerland kyun jab Kashmir hai?" Here's the honest answer: the Schengen visa fee and wait, Gulmarg against Jungfraujoch, where Switzerland really wins, what Kashmir costs with us, and who should pick which.

Kashmir vs Switzerland? If you're planning a snow trip from India this winter and you want mountains, lakes and a stay with a view without a visa queue, we'd say try Kashmir first. Our 8 September reel asks it straight on the first screen, in Hindi: "This winter: Switzerland kyun jab Kashmir hai?" (why Switzerland, when there's Kashmir?), then answers with clip after clip of our own snow. Switzerland is a great trip too, and below we say plainly where it wins.

Watch it on our Instagram: "Switzerland kyun jab Kashmir hai?", our winter snow reel with the Switzerland-or-Kashmir question (8 Sep 2026)

We're a Srinagar agency, so you know which side we're on. We've kept the Swiss facts to Swiss government sources, dated, and we've left out anything we can't check.

Kashmir vs Switzerland: the short answer

What you're comparing Kashmir Switzerland
Visa for Indian passports None. It's a domestic trip Schengen visa: EUR 90 per adult, plus the VFS service charge of ₹1,380 and ₹150 convenience fee (Swiss government and VFS sites, 2026)
Visa time Nothing to wait for Usually a decision within 15 days of a complete application; Switzerland says it can take 30 to 60 days in some cases
Getting there Direct flights to Srinagar from several Indian cities, or the Vande Bharat train from Katra International flight, usually into Zurich or Geneva
High snow you can ride up to Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2, about 3,980 m (J&K Tourism) Jungfraujoch, 3,454 m, Europe's highest railway station (jungfrau.ch)
Something besides snow Dal Lake, houseboats, shikara, Wazwan Scenic trains, lakeside towns, chocolate and cheese
Our verdict Better for a first snow trip, a honeymoon on a budget, families with elders, short notice Better if you already have a Schengen visa, want Europe in the same trip, and the budget isn't the question

What our reel shows

The reel runs about 20 seconds. It opens on a black screen with the line "This winter: Switzerland kyun jab Kashmir hai?", then a single word: "Wait." What follows is all snow. A green river cutting through a white valley under sharp peaks. A row of bare trees standing in deep snow. A brown horse walking down an icy road with snow mountains behind it. A motorbike ride down a cleared lane between pines. Wooden village houses with snow piled up to the fences. Snowy ridges under a hard blue sky. It ends on snow-loaded trees over a road, a white jeep with snow on its roof, and the line "DM to book your winter package".

The caption keeps it simple: "Before you book Switzerland… give Kashmir one chance." It lists what Kashmir has (snow-covered mountains, clear lakes, green meadows, quiet valleys, good stays) and ends with the question: Switzerland or Kashmir? Comment your choice.

What the reel doesn't promise is snow on your exact dates. These are winter clips. Snow in Kashmir comes in spells, and some winters start late, so if snow is the whole point, plan for January or February and keep a spare day. Our guide to when and where it snows in Kashmir has the details.

Where Kashmir wins

No visa, no appointment, no waiting

This is the big one. For Switzerland you need a Schengen visa. The Swiss government's own FAQ puts the fee at EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, and says a decision usually comes within 15 days of a complete application, longer in some cases. VFS, which takes Swiss applications in India, adds a ₹1,380 service charge and a ₹150 convenience fee per person, and every family member, kids included, needs their own appointment with fingerprints. The Swiss embassy suggests applying early, at the earliest 6 months before you travel.

Kashmir needs none of that. If a wedding date moves or the office finally approves your leave, you can be on a Srinagar flight the same week.

Snow at height, and a way up into it

Gulmarg sits at 2,650 m, and the Gondola's second phase goes up to about 3,980 m on Kongdoori, a shoulder of Apharwat (J&K Tourism figures). That's higher than Jungfraujoch, Switzerland's famous "Top of Europe" station at 3,454 m. Height isn't everything, and the Swiss Alps have far more peaks, lifts and resorts, but you don't need to cross a continent to stand in deep snow at altitude. Gondola tickets are sold only by the J&K Cable Car Corporation; our Gulmarg Gondola booking help page explains how we plan the day around it.

Winter here isn't only snow

On a slow-road day you still have Srinagar: a shikara on Dal Lake, a night on a houseboat, kahwa by the bukhari, a Wazwan meal. Kashmir gets called the "Switzerland of India", but honestly the houseboats and the food are things Switzerland doesn't have.

You can talk to someone local

Our drivers and our Srinagar desk know which road is open that morning. When the snow comes down hard, we change the plan with you on the phone, in Hindi or English, instead of you working it out alone in a foreign country.

Where Switzerland wins

We'd be lying if we said Switzerland has nothing on us. Its trains and mountain railways are famous for a reason, the ski areas are bigger and more numerous, and the whole country is set up for visitors who want to travel on their own. If you already hold a valid Schengen visa, or you're doing Paris or Italy on the same trip, adding Switzerland makes sense. And if the budget really isn't a question, it's a wonderful trip.

Kashmir in winter also has its hard days: heavy snow can slow the Srinagar to Gulmarg road for hours, and police sometimes require 4x4s with chains from Tangmarg (those are run by the local union at its own rates, not by us). We plan for that with a night in Gulmarg and a spare day before your flight. Our Kashmir vs Manali comparison has dated examples from January 2026.

What a Kashmir trip costs with us

We can't give you a fair Swiss total. Flights, hotels and Swiss rail passes change with dates, so check the Swiss government sites for those. Here's what we charge, per person, 2 sharing (2026):

  • Srinagar 4D/3N: ₹12,999
  • Gulmarg 4D/3N: ₹16,999
  • Pahalgam 5D/4N: ₹19,999

These include 3-star hotels, a houseboat night, breakfast and dinner, a private Etios with tolls and parking, airport transfers and a shikara ride, with 5% GST included. Flights to Srinagar aren't included. The final price depends on your dates, hotel category and group size, so WhatsApp us for an exact quote. So which should you pick?

  • First time seeing snow: Kashmir. Gulmarg for the snow, Srinagar for the lake.
  • Honeymoon: Kashmir if you want the houseboat and snow without a visa wait; Switzerland if you're combining it with Europe and the budget allows. Our Kashmir honeymoon package page shows what we plan.
  • Family with elders or small kids: Kashmir. One domestic flight, no visa appointments for every family member.
  • Short notice, 5 or 6 days: Kashmir.
  • You already have a Schengen visa and a Europe trip planned: Switzerland.

FAQ

Is Kashmir really like Switzerland?

In winter the snow, pines and wooden houses look a lot alike, as our reel shows. The rest is different: Kashmir has Dal Lake, houseboats and Wazwan, and Switzerland has its mountain railways and bigger ski areas.

Do Indians need a visa for Switzerland?

Yes, a Schengen visa. The fee is EUR 90 for adults, plus the VFS service charge, and a decision usually takes about 15 days after a complete application. Kashmir needs no visa for Indian citizens.

Is Kashmir cheaper than Switzerland?

For most Indian travellers, yes, because there's no international flight or visa. Our packages start at ₹12,999 per person, 2 sharing, for 4 days in Srinagar (flights to Srinagar extra).
