The Delhi to Srinagar bus is the answer we give guests when flights get too expensive or sell out. On 13 August we posted a reel of two sleeper Volvos running side by side down a divided highway, with a simple caption: a daily sleeper Volvo between Delhi and Srinagar, an onboard washroom, movies on the way, leaving Delhi around 4 PM and reaching Srinagar around 10 AM the next morning. It has been watched about 29,000 times, so here is what we tell people who ask us about it.

What the sleeper Volvo in our reel offers
The reel itself is short: two dark sleeper coaches moving along a wide highway lined with palms and green hills. The caption lists what matters for an 18-hour ride. A proper sleeper berth, so you lie flat instead of sitting up all night. A washroom on board, which takes away the worst part of long bus trips for families and women travelling together. Movies or some entertainment. And it runs every day in both directions.
The caption also says "budget-friendly", and that is the honest pitch. You lose a day on the road, but you save the flight fare and one night's hotel, because you sleep on the bus. When we posted the reel we asked people to comment "BOOK" for details. The same offer stands here: message us your date and we'll help you plan the bus leg and have a cab waiting when you arrive.
Delhi to Srinagar bus time and route
Almost the whole trip is one road. NH44 runs north out of Delhi through Panipat, Karnal, Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Pathankot, and carries on through Kathua to Jammu. From Jammu the last stretch to Srinagar is the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, about 247 km through Udhampur, Ramban, Banihal and Qazigund.
That last part is where the time goes. The plains are quick and mostly happen while you sleep. The mountain section after Udhampur is slower, with tunnels, bends and stretches of single-lane work. Two tunnels have made it far shorter than it used to be: the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee tunnel (the old Chenani–Nashri tunnel) and the Qazigund road tunnel under the Banihal pass together cut about 40 km off the old route.

From our 13 Aug 2026 reel.
Traffic on this mountain stretch is managed every day by the J&K Traffic Police. On 17 October 2026 their advisory reported slow movement at a single-lane spot near Udhampur and between Marog and Kishtwari Pather because of road work and nomadic herds on the move, and asked travellers not to stop unnecessarily between Ramban and Banihal. A bus driver deals with all of this for you, but it explains why "around 10 AM" can turn into noon.

Delhi to Srinagar bus ticket price
The only fares we'll print are the ones the operator publishes itself. J&K Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC), the government operator, lists these Delhi to Srinagar fares on its own website (checked 19 October 2026):
- Non-AC, seat: ₹2,100
- Non-AC, sleeper: ₹2,300
- AC Volvo, seat: ₹2,800
- The fare list adds a note: ₹200 extra for each sleeper
Private sleeper Volvos and other AC sleepers on this route price by date. Long weekends and holidays push fares up, the same way they push flights up. Check the operator's own website or app for your date, or WhatsApp us and we'll check for you. We don't publish private fares because they change too often to be right for long.
Bus, flight or train: when the bus makes sense
For most trips a flight still makes more sense. Delhi to Srinagar is a short flight, and on a five or six day trip one full day on a bus is a big share of your holiday. The bus is the right call when:
- Flight fares jump close to your dates (long weekends, festivals, school holidays).
- You're on a tight budget and happy to swap a hotel night for a berth.
- You're carrying a lot of luggage or winter gear.
- Flights are sold out and you have to be in Srinagar by a fixed date.
There is also a train option now, though not a direct one. As of October 2026 no train runs straight from Delhi to Srinagar: you go to Jammu Tawi or Katra first, then take the Vande Bharat to Srinagar. According to the Government of India's PIB release on the service, train 26401 leaves Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 AM (not on Tuesdays), and train 26403 leaves at 1:20 PM and arrives at 6:00 PM (not on Wednesdays). Timings change, so confirm on IRCTC. If you'd rather drive the Jammu leg, our Jammu to Srinagar taxi picks you up at the station or bus stand. For every way in, our how to reach Kashmir guide puts flights, trains and road side by side.
Taking the bus in winter
In winter the Jammu–Srinagar highway can shut for hours, sometimes days, after heavy snow, landslides or shooting stones in the Ramban and Banihal stretch. In February 2019 rain and avalanches closed it for about a week. A bus that's due at 10 AM can reach the next day.

From our 13 Aug 2026 reel.
What we tell winter guests:
- Check the J&K Traffic Police advisory the evening before you leave. It comes out daily and says whether the highway is open.
- Don't plan anything for the morning you arrive. No Gulmarg day trip, no fixed check-in time. Treat the arrival day as a rest day.
- On the way back, keep a full day between the bus and any flight or train out of Delhi.
- Carry snacks, water, a power bank and a warm layer inside the bus, not in the luggage hold.
Our Kashmir in December guide covers what the valley looks like once the snow comes.
How we'd plan a bus trip to Kashmir
- Book the berth first, then the hotel. On busy dates berths can sell out, so confirm your bus first and we'll lock your houseboat or hotel around it.
- Ask where the bus drops you in Srinagar. Drop points differ by operator. Tell us the exact spot and we'll have a cab waiting so you're not hunting for one with bags at 10 AM.
- Keep day one light. After 18 hours on the road, a shikara ride on Dal Lake in the evening is about right. Gulmarg can wait for day two.
- Budget the rest of the trip. Our Kashmir trip cost guide shows what hotels, cabs and sightseeing add up to once you're here.
- Want it all in one booking? Our Delhi to Kashmir packages and Kashmir cab service start the moment you land or get off the bus.
