A Kashmir itinerary for 4 days works best when you sleep in Srinagar, do Gulmarg and Pahalgam as two separate day trips, and keep the last morning easy before your flight. That covers the three places most first-timers ask for, with one hotel check-in and no repacking. Sonmarg doesn't fit in four days without rushing, so we leave it for a longer trip.
On 23 October 2026 we posted a short reel for anyone planning a winter trip, with one message on screen: "1 mahina pehle", book a month before. It runs through five reasons: hotel and cab rates go up in peak season, Gondola tickets sell out early, the best houseboats fill first, you confirm with only a 20% advance, and booking early gets you our best options. A four-day trip is exactly where that matters, because there's no spare day to fix a missed Gondola slot or a houseboat that got sold.
Watch it on our Instagram: why to book your Kashmir winter trip a month early (23 October 2026)

4 days in Kashmir at a glance
| Day | Plan | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Land at Srinagar airport, check in, shikara on Dal Lake before sunset | Houseboat on Dal Lake |
| Day 2 | Day trip to Gulmarg: meadow, Gondola if you have tickets | Srinagar |
| Day 3 | Day trip to Pahalgam: Betaab, Aru or Chandanwari by union taxi | Srinagar |
| Day 4 | Mughal gardens or the old city in the morning, then the airport | Home |
Drive times from our taxi pages: Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 51 km, roughly 1.5 hours; Srinagar to Pahalgam is about 95 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. Traffic, photo stops and snow add time.
Day-by-day: our 3 nights 4 days Kashmir trip
Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar, houseboat and shikara
Our driver meets you in arrivals at Srinagar airport and follows your flight number, so a delay doesn't leave you stranded. We take you to the houseboat, you drop the bags and go out on a shikara before the light goes. Don't plan anything big on day 1. Flights run late, and a late landing should end on the lake, not on the highway.
The houseboat night is the one our reel says to lock in first: "best houseboats sabse pehle bhar jaate hain". If you want a particular boat or a lake-facing room, tell us when you book. More on choosing one in our houseboat price guide, and the ride itself on our shikara booking page.

Day 2: Gulmarg day trip
Leave Srinagar after an early breakfast. Gulmarg goes on day 2, in the middle of the trip, for a reason: if the Gondola stops for wind or cloud, you still have day 3 to try again instead of losing it on your last morning. In winter we stop at Tangmarg for chains; if the road needs a union 4x4, that's a local cost paid there.
Book Gondola tickets yourself, as early as you can, on etickets.jammukashmircablecar.com. Our reel puts it plainly: "Gondola tickets jaldi sold out ho jaate hain". Don't buy from anyone at the base selling a "confirmed ticket". Our Gulmarg Gondola booking guide has the steps.
Want a night up there instead of a day trip? That's our 4-day Gulmarg tour package, which swaps a Srinagar night for a Gulmarg one so you get the first Gondola slot. In that version Pahalgam drops out.

Day 3: Pahalgam day trip
This is the long day, so leave by 8. The road runs south past Pampore's saffron fields and Awantipora. In Pahalgam, the valley points (Betaab, Aru, Chandanwari) run on local union taxis, not on your own car, and that's a separate cost paid there. Baisaran is closed until the end of 2026, so don't plan around it, and don't pay anyone who says they can take you.
Back in Srinagar by evening. If three hours each way sounds like too much, stay a night in Pahalgam: that's the 5-day itinerary shape, or the Pahalgam tour package.
Day 4: Srinagar morning, then the airport
Keep it light. Chashme Shahi, Nishat or Shalimar if they're open that season, or a walk through the old city, then lunch and the airport. Give yourself a buffer before the flight. Your car is with you all morning, so the bags stay in the boot.
Winter vs summer: how the 4-day plan changes
Winter (December to February)
- Gulmarg is the reason most people come. Keep it on day 2 and book the Gondola the day you book the trip.
- Pahalgam depends on the road and the snow. If it's not sensible that day, we swap day 3 for a Srinagar day or a second go at Gulmarg. We'd rather tell you that morning than drive you into a closed road.
- The Mughal gardens are often bare or shut in deep winter; the old city and a shikara on a still lake are better on day 4.
- Christmas, New Year and the Chillai Kalan weeks fill fastest. This is what the reel means by "1 mahina pehle".

Summer (April to October)
- Same shape. The gardens are at their best, so day 4 has more to do.
- You can swap Pahalgam for Sonmarg when the road is open, but not do both in four days. Our Gulmarg vs Pahalgam guide helps you pick.
- April to June is peak season. Hotel and cab rates go up, which is point 1 on the reel.

How we'd plan your 4 days
- Book a month ahead in winter and peak summer. Hotels, houseboats and Gondola slots go first.
- Two people don't need a Crysta. An Etios is enough for two with medium bags; take the Crysta for four or more, or for winter luggage.
- Put Gulmarg on day 2, never on the last day.
- Carry a postpaid SIM; prepaid SIMs from outside J&K don't work here. Details in does my SIM work in Kashmir.
- If you can add a day, do. Our how many days are enough for Kashmir post explains what each extra day buys you.
FAQ
Is 4 days enough for Kashmir?
For Srinagar plus Gulmarg and Pahalgam as day trips, yes. For Sonmarg as well, or a night in Pahalgam, take 5 to 6 days.
Can we cover Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam in 4 days?
Not without rushing. Each is a full day from Srinagar, and you lose most of day 1 and day 4 to flights. Pick two.
Should we stay in Gulmarg or Srinagar?
Srinagar if you want Pahalgam too. A Gulmarg night if snow and the first Gondola slot matter more than a second valley.
