Yes, October is a good month for Kashmir, and this year the mountains gave us an early preview. Overnight into 17 September, the upper area of Gulmarg's Phase 2 got its first fresh snow of the season, and the reel we posted that morning shows an empty chairlift seat sitting in it, in thick fog. That is what October can look like up high: a dusting on the tops after a spell of bad weather. Down in Srinagar it's the opposite. Days are dry and mostly clear, the chinars start to turn, and you won't need a full winter suitcase.

Kashmir weather in October
Srinagar's long-term October normals (India Meteorological Department, 1991-2020) put the average daily high at about 23.0°C and the average low at about 6.2°C, with roughly 22 mm of rain over two rainy days. So the days are dry and bright. The nights are not. We tell every October guest the same thing: a sweater is enough at noon in Nishat, and you'll want a proper jacket as soon as the sun goes down.
Gulmarg and Pahalgam sit much higher, so take a few degrees off everything. And weather is never guaranteed. A western disturbance can bring a day or two of cloud and rain to the valley and snow to the peaks, then clear again. Last season the first snow on Affarwat and Sunshine Peak came on the night of 2 to 3 October 2025. This season it showed up on Phase 2 even earlier, in mid-September. Neither means you'll walk on snow in October. It means the tops might be white when you look up.

Gulmarg: snow on top, meadow below
The 17 September reel was filmed on the Phase 2 upper area, which is where early snow shows first. The Gulmarg meadow itself usually stays green or turns straw-coloured through October. If snow is a bonus for you, a clear day on Phase 2 is your best October chance; if it's the main reason for the trip, read our Kashmir snowfall guide first, because October can't promise it.
Book Gondola tickets only on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation site, and check the fare there on the day you book. Phase 2 can stop for wind while Phase 1 keeps running. Our Srinagar to Gulmarg cab starts from ₹2,500 (2026); tolls, parking and waiting time aren't part of that "from" figure, so confirm them when you book. Put Gulmarg in the middle of your trip, not on the last afternoon before a flight, so one cloudy morning doesn't cost you the day. More on the town itself in our Gulmarg travel guide.
Tangmarg: a fire going in the evening
On 24 September we posted a collab with @thecheesecottage.tangmarg: food cooked over an open fire at a cottage stay in Tangmarg. Flames, iron and smoke, as the caption puts it. Tangmarg is the last town on the Srinagar road before the climb up to Gulmarg. It's a good base when you want Gulmarg by day and a quieter evening below it, and in October that evening is cold enough that a fire makes sense. Ask us about the cottage when you plan; we'll tell you honestly whether it suits your group.
12 km from Lal Chowk: the A-frame cottage
Our 20 September carousel walks through a wooden A-frame cottage near Dachigam: the pointed timber front, a double bedroom, an open kitchen with wooden stairs up to a loft. The caption says it's only 12 km from Lal Chowk. That makes it an easy night out of the city between two Srinagar days, without a long drive. We haven't published the rate, so WhatsApp us for it. For October, ask how the cottage is heated at night; that's the first thing we check for any stay after mid-month.
Pahalgam: a village walk away from the points
Our 15 September village-walk reel shows another side of Pahalgam: a mud house with a grass roof, standing in a pine meadow. October is good walking weather for this, with cool air and dry paths. Go with a local, keep to the path through fields, and ask before you photograph anyone's home. Our Srinagar to Pahalgam cab starts from ₹2,500 (2026). Apple gardens: the end of the harvest
On 12 September our guests from Poland had coffee in an apple garden (watch the reel). By October the harvest is winding down, but in the first half of the month you still see late fruit being picked and packed in the orchards. Always ask the orchard owner before you walk in or pick anything.
Chinar colours and Harud
Harud is the Kashmiri word for autumn, when the harvests finish and the big chinars (boin) change colour. How it usually moves, as in our chinar and Harud guide:
- Early October: green canopy, edges starting to go yellow.
- Mid-October: amber, then bronze. The Mughal gardens already look rich.
- Late October into early November: the deepest reds, then leaf fall with the first hard frosts.
Nobody can promise you the reddest day months ahead. Wind or rain can strip a tree in a weekend. If the colour matters most, aim for the second half of the month and keep one flexible morning in Srinagar for Naseem Bagh, Nishat and Shalimar.
What else is open in October
- Srinagar: the Mughal gardens, the old city and Dal Lake shikaras. Our shikara rides start from ₹800 (2026).
- Sonamarg: fine as a day trip in October; check the road on the morning you go.
- Gurez: only early in the month. The road crosses Razdan Pass, which can shut with the first heavy snow and stay shut until spring, so keep a backup day.
- Pampore saffron: the purple bloom usually starts in late October and runs into November. In 2025 local reports had flowers by mid-October. Check the week you travel before planning a dawn stop.

What to pack for October
- A fleece or sweater for daytime in Srinagar, and a warm jacket for evenings, Gulmarg and Pahalgam
- Walking shoes with grip for garden paths and meadow tracks (snow boots can stay at home)
- A light rain layer, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Warm sleepwear, because not every room is heated the same way; ask before you book

How we'd plan an October trip
- Base in Srinagar for the chinars, with day trips to Gulmarg and Pahalgam, so a cloudy day up high doesn't waste a colour morning.
- Keep Gulmarg mid-trip. Look at the Phase 2 forecast the evening before, not the week before.
- Add one night out of the city: the A-frame near Dachigam if you want to stay close, Tangmarg if you want to be under Gulmarg.
- If your dates reach the last week of October, leave a morning for Pampore in case the saffron has started.
- Message us the week you fly. We watch the western disturbances for guests who are already on the road.
FAQ
Does it snow in Kashmir in October?
Only on the high peaks and passes, and only after bad weather. This year Gulmarg's Phase 2 upper area had a dusting as early as 17 September; in 2025 Affarwat's first snow came on 2 to 3 October. Don't expect snow in Srinagar or on the Gulmarg meadow.
Is October a good time for Gulmarg?
Yes, for clear views, the Gondola and meadow walks without summer crowds. It's not a snow-play month. Keep a spare day in case Phase 2 closes for wind.
When do chinar leaves turn red in Kashmir?
Colour builds through October. The deepest reds usually arrive in late October and early November, then the leaves fall. The exact week changes every year.
