Five days is the length we recommend most for a first Kashmir trip. It gives you Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam without rushing, plus either Sonamarg or a spare day for weather. The trick is one night in Pahalgam instead of a long return drive.

Day by day
Day 1: our driver meets you at Srinagar airport. Keep it easy: houseboat check-in and a shikara. See houseboat or hotel.
Day 2: Gulmarg is about 51 km, roughly 1.5 hours. Book the Gondola early; read Gondola Phase 1 vs Phase 2.
Day 3: Pahalgam is about 95 km, 2.5 to 3 hours. Inside Pahalgam, local spots run on the union taxi, paid on the spot. Baisaran is closed until the end of 2026, so we skip it. See our Pahalgam village walk.
Day 4: return to Srinagar with a stop at Pampore, then Nishat and Shalimar; see Mughal gardens.
Day 5: with an evening flight, do Sonamarg (read Sonmarg vs Gulmarg); otherwise shop in the old city and head to the airport.
Winter version
From December to February we keep day 5 as a weather buffer and decide Sonamarg on the morning. Snow can mean chains at Tangmarg. Flights can be held by fog, so avoid early morning departures.
