We will not name the family. We will not invent dishes, prices or restaurant lists. Below is what that sitting looked like from our side, how a classic Wazwan is served, the etiquette that keeps it respectful, and how visitors can taste it without crashing a wedding.

From the airport to the wedding floor
The 19 September wedding reel is short and clear. Guest arrives. We skip the restaurant. He sits with locals at the floor meal. The caption says good food, Kashmiri hospitality, a little fun, and memories you do not get on a regular itinerary. That matches what we planned that day.
The welcome reel from the same morning shows the other half: bouquet, indoor greeting, and the sense that he was received as more than a tourist. We keep faces and names where the reels keep them. No extra detail invented for this page.

What a Wazwan sitting is like
Guests sit on the floor in fours around a large copper plate, the trami. Before the meal, a basin and jug (tash-t-nari) comes around so people wash their hands. The cook in charge is the vasta waza. Most of the meat is lamb, cooked with fennel, dried ginger and Kashmiri chilli. That is the shape of the meal we describe on our Kashmiri Wazwan page, and it is the dish reference for this post.
A few dishes mark the sitting for most guests:
- Tabakh maaz: lamb ribs cooked with yoghurt, then fried.
- Rista: pounded meatball in a red gravy.
- Rogan josh: lamb braised with chilli.
- Gushtaba: meatballs in a yoghurt gravy, served last. When Gushtaba arrives, the meal is ending.

Etiquette: you go as someone's guest
This part matters more than the dish names.
A Kashmiri wedding Wazwan is a private family event. You go because someone brought you. You do not turn up uninvited, film every face, or treat the hall like a food court. On 19 September our guest was with us, and we were there as guests ourselves. That is the only way this kind of evening works.
Practical habits we tell our travellers:
- Wash your hands when the tash-t-nari comes. Eat with the group on your trami.
- Follow the pace of the table. Gushtaba last means the meal is closing.
- Ask before you photograph people. Our reels show what we chose to share; your camera is not a free pass.
- Dress neat and comfortable for floor sitting. There is no formal dress code beyond basic respect.
- Never ask a host for a "tourist rate" at their wedding. That is not how this works.
If a host invites you through us, we brief you before you sit. If nobody has invited you, we do not fake a wedding for content.
How visitors taste Wazwan without a wedding
Most guests will not land on a wedding day. That is fine. A classic sitting can still be arranged as an extra in Srinagar when a waza has the evening free.
How we handle it:
- Tell us the date and the number of people, in multiples that fit a trami (groups of four share one plate).
- We ask a waza. We do not pretend a hotel breakfast is Wazwan.
- We will not name a restaurant as "the one" on this page. Our own guide is clear on that, and we stick to it.
- It is not bundled into budget, summer or winter package quotes. It is a separate ask.

Vegetarian and Jain guests
A classic Wazwan is a meat meal. Saying "hold the lamb" does not turn it into the same feast. If you need a vegetarian or Jain table, say so early. It is a different order, planned ahead, not a Wazwan with the meat removed.
For Jain travellers we follow our house rule: Jain meals on request only. We never promise pure or guaranteed Jain food on every night of a tour. Tell us before we ask the waza, and we will be honest about what that kitchen can do for your dates.
How we'd plan a Kashmiri wazwan experience
- Decide if you want a private waza sitting or only hope for a real wedding invite through people you know. We do not sell crash-a-wedding tours.
- Give us date, headcount (think in fours), and diet limits before we call a waza.
- Keep the Wazwan evening in Srinagar when possible. It sits better as an extra night than as a rushed stop between Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
- Eat light at lunch that day. A full trami is a long meal.
