Kashmir in January: Snow, Cold, Roads and How to Plan the Trip

Kashmir in January from our Srinagar desk: Chillai Kalan cold, Gulmarg snow, frozen edges of Dal Lake, road tips and packages from ₹12,999.

January is the deep winter month in Kashmir. It falls inside Chillai Kalan, the coldest 40 days of the year that run from 21 December to 31 January, so you get the best chance of thick snow in Gulmarg and the coldest nights in Srinagar. If snow is the reason you are coming, January is a strong pick. If you hate the cold, come in March instead.

What January feels like

Nights in Srinagar go below freezing, and Gulmarg is colder again. Days are often clear and bright after a snowfall. Houses run bukharis and people carry a kangri under the pheran, read our kangri and pheran guide. For more on the cold spell, see Chillai Kalan 2026.

Where to go

  • Gulmarg: the main snow trip, skiing and the Gondola. See Gondola booking.
  • Srinagar: shikara on a cold Dal Lake, see Dal Lake in winter.
  • Pahalgam: snowy and quiet; some spots depend on road clearing.
  • Sonamarg: access depends on snow on the day. We tell you the morning before.

Roads and flights

After heavy snow, taxis may need chains at Tangmarg or a switch to a 4x4 for the last stretch to Gulmarg. Morning fog can hold flights at Srinagar. Keep one spare half day and do not book a tight connection home.

What it costs

Our packages: Srinagar 4D/3N from ₹12,999, Gulmarg 4D/3N from ₹16,999 and Pahalgam 5D/4N from ₹19,999 per person (2 sharing). Cabs: Etios ₹2,500 per day and Innova Crysta ₹3,500 per day, tolls and parking included. January is busy around snow weekends, so book early; read why we say book winter early. Gondola tickets and 4x4 charges are separate.

FAQ

Is there snow in Kashmir in January?

Usually yes in Gulmarg, and often in Srinagar too, but no one can promise a date. Ask us for the latest a few days before you travel.

Is January too cold for kids and parents?

It is cold, but warm hotels and proper clothing make it fine. Keep evenings indoors and outings short.

Can I visit Sonamarg in January?

Sometimes. It depends on snow on the road. We check on the day and switch the plan if needed.
